Hobby Nostalgia

Did you have a childhood hobby that you've outgrown, or had to put aside to prioritize the responsibilities of adult life? If you're like me you probably had several hobbies like that! One that I've been thinking about lately was a hobby that I adored: building fairie houses. I look back with great fondness on those evenings spent hot-gluing rocks and shells and twigs together.

I built three or four fairie houses back in my adolescence/young adulthood. My first one was mounted on a gorgeous mossy piece of wood, and I judiciously bedecked it with sea urchin spines, shell fragments, antlers, rocks, glass, and feathers. It was meant to be "functional." As in, if fairies were real, they'd be able to live in it!

I made another one out of a paper lantern. The centre column was the home, and the outer paper lantern part could be accordioned up to see what was inside. I really enjoyed putting the roof together, though of course it took FOREVER to glue all those little shingles on!

My final and favourite fairie house that I want to share with you was a collaborative effort with my best friend in Bible college. We created a fairie house together, with me doing the ground floor living room and her doing the second floor bedroom. We enjoyed it a lot, even though I did stab her in the hand with the hot glue gun by accident, once!

I have been considering picking this hobby up again, but with a new twist: I now have a pet guinea pig, and I think it would be fun to create some habitations for him! So far I've made a few structures out of cardboard, which he aggressively enjoys and destroys. As I speak I can hear him in the other room, biting his cardboard house and shaking it to and fro. Crazy guy! So wood might be a bit more appropriate for him. I hope I can share some cute little guinea pig habitats, soon! One's life should have room for at least one hobby, right?

I enjoyed taking some time to look back on these fun projects of the past. Speaking of hobbies, I was recently featured in a blog post about hobbies on rent.com. :D Check it out! https://www.rent.com/blog/hobbies-to-do-at-home/

What's a hobby that you wish you could bring back from your earlier life?
